Getting your garden ready for winter

Autumn Autumn

With November nearly upon us, now is a great time to start preparing your garden for winter.

From pruning back bushes to planting some bulbs, a little time spent now will get you off to the best possible start next spring.

Here’s some of the jobs to get stuck into over the coming weeks…

Pruning and trimming

At this time of year, deciduous plants and trees enter a state of dormancy, making it a great time to do some pruning.

Winter pruning offers many benefits to plants and trees, such as:

• Reducing risk of disease
• Encouraging healthy new growth in spring
• Improving the appearance of the plant
• Removing dead or dying areas
• Less stressful than pruning in growth periods

Plants and trees that benefit from winter pruning includes roses, apple and pear trees, deciduous shrubs, and deciduous ornamental trees.

One of the most important things when pruning is to use clean, sharp secateurs. Here’s a few of our recommendations:

Planting bulbs

Now is prime bulb-planting season!

Investing a little time planting bulbs now will reward you with a stunning display come next spring.

Take the pain out of planting

If you want to make your life a lot easier, you should invest in a good bulb planter or transplanting trowel.

Bulb planters not only make digging the hole for your bulb a breeze, they often feature markers so you can easily plant your bulbs to the right depth (this should be printed on the packaging).
