Young Gardeners – Pizza Faces

Blog Young Gardeners

Make your own pizza faces!

For this project, we used tomatoes, peppers and basil as these are vegetables we are planning to grow this year. You can come up with a wide range of topping ideas to create your own tasty design if those aren’t your favourites! Mushrooms, sweetcorn, peas, meats, herbs, spices, pineapple, olives…the choices are endless!

You can buy ready-made pizza bases from the supermarket, or use a wrap as the base for your pizza. Alternatively, you can make your own dough – this is quite simple and doesn’t require a lot of ingredients, but takes a bit more time.

Ingredients

  • A pizza base or tortilla wrap
  • A handful of grated cheese
  • 1 tin of tomatoes
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 handful of basil ripped into approx 1cm pieces (1/2 tsp dried basil will also work.)
  • 1/4 tsp honey
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Toppings: sliced tomatoes, peppers, olives, spinach, ham, mushrooms, small pieces of chicken, etc.

Method

  • First make the tomato sauce by adding the tin of tomatoes, crushed garlic, handful of torn basil, honey, and salt and pepper to a bowl and mix well. Then set aside for all of the flavours to combine.
  • Preheat your oven to 200c/400F/Gas 6/Fan 180.
  • Prepare your chosen toppings. Some may be sliced, torn or cubed to the desired shape and size, get creative!
  • Spread a thin layer of the tomato sauce that you prepared earlier, over the surface of your chosen pizza base.
  • Grate some cheese and sprinkle over the top of the sauce layer
  • Add your toppings. You can create all kinds of unique faces and patterns. Have a go… you can make anything you want!
  • Place in the oven and bake for 8 – 10 minutes until the cheese has melted and the toppings are slightly golden.

Get making, have fun!

Young Gardeners – Eat what you grow!

A huge part of the fun of gardening is eating food that you have grown yourself! When you have taken a seed, followed the instructions on the packet, taken time to water and care for the plant, then been excited when the fruit started to appear, it is a really lovely moment when you finally get to pick it! All your hard work has paid off.

Herbs are used in so many of the foods we eat and are delicious! Herbs are easy to grow and can be grown in pots or on a windowsill so don’t need too much room. Before reading on how many herbs can you say out loud? We have some favourites….take a look below.
To grow your own herbs you will need:
A container – this could be anything that will contain the compost… an old ice cream tub, an old flower pot, a mug.
A few handfuls of multipurpose compost.
A packet of herb seeds.
Method:
Fill your container with compost
Sprinkle your seeds lightly on the surface of the compost (I chose to do a pattern)
Cover the seeds with a light layer of compost
Place on a sunny windowsill
Maintain moisture by watering regularly
