Britain Get Growing – Guide to Gardening and Planting Equipment

At British Garden Centres we want to encourage everyone to try gardening, you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy gardening, gardening can be enjoyed by everyone. We thought we’d create a guide to gardening and planting equipment.

When first starting out in gardening there are so many different options of equipment to choose from.

What Equipment is needed to sow seeds?

When it’s time to sow seeds, we always recommend following the instructions on the seeds pack. There are different pots and containers that can be used to hold the seeds.

Windowsill Greenhouse

Window Greenhouses like the Garland Windowsill Greenhouse are perfect for use in your home or greenhouse. The small windowsill greenhouse is ideal if you don’t have space outside to sow seeds.

Fibre Pots

Fibre Pots

Fibre Pots are a great way to not disturb roots, simply sow seeds in the pots and once the roots appear through the side of the pot, plant directly into the ground.

You don’t have to spend a lot of money on pots, you can re-use items from around the home such as tin cans, egg box cartons and even toilet roll tubes!

Seed trays and pots

Seed trays and pots come in different sizes to suit your gardening projects. Propagator Covers can also be used to cover the pot and tray if you have no access to a greenhouse, some have sliding vents on the top for veneration.

Window Box

Window Boxes

Don’t have a garden? Don’t worry window boxes are perfect for flats or small gardening and are a great way to grow a small kitchen garden or flowers. It’s important to plan where you are going to have your window box and consider how heavy the window might get when full of compost and plants. Drainage holes will need to be added to the box. Window boxes can be fun and decorative, they can create a focal point for your property.

Raised Beds

If you want to grow your own vegetables in the ground, creating a raised bed can have many benefits as well as looking nice in your garden. They can help to keep pests off your plants, they raise the soil, therefore, creating better drainage. Raised beds will help to reduce the number of weeds growing and helps reduce the amount of bending you so is better for your back. Premade Raised Beds can be brought or alternatively they can be made using wood and a little DIY, there is an option for all budgets.

Growing Bag

Vegetable Growing Bags

Another great way to grow vegetables such as potatoes and carrots is by using grow bags. These bags tend to be heavy-duty with handles and windows for easy harvesting.

Deep Root Planter

Deep Root Planters are ideal for use in gardens, they can sit on patios, gravel, or grass. Deep Root Planters are great for flowering plants, kitchen gardens or growing your own vegetables. The planter is off the ground which makes it easier for planting and helps to deter pests.

Greenhouses and Cold Frames

Green Houses are a way of creating a controlled environment to grow plants. Greenhouses will protect plants from frost and the elements helping to increase growing success. You don’t have to invest in a full-size Greenhouse there are other smaller options such as mini greenhouses or cold frames. Mini Green Houses and cold frames are perfect for smaller gardens or beginners who don’t want to invest in a full-size greenhouse. They help to protect against frost, and pests and create a warm environment to help grow.
