Decorate your Door for Autumn
In recent years decorating your door for autumn has grown in popularity, so we thought we’d put a guide together to help you create your perfect autumn décor.
Your front door is the most viewed part of your house and is where you welcome visitors, why not decorate it this autumn? We’ve put together a useful guide with ideas on how to decorate your door from wreaths to planters to pumpkins.
Wreaths
Autumn wreaths are a must-have for decorating your door, choose from faux or real wreaths. Why not create one with items you can find in your gardens like autumn leaves, berries or shrubs clipping for example from the Gaultheria Procumbens with its metallic foliage? Or get crafty with the kids and create your own wreath out of material or items you can find at your local British Garden Centre in our autumn displays in-store.
Easy Autumn and Winter Planters
Have you seen our latest videos on creating an autumn planter? Making an autumn planter is quick and easy and can be done in just a few minutes and will brighten up your doorstep in no time.
Step 1:
Place broken terracotta pots inside the planter pot. In the winter months, it will help to allow the water to drain within your pot and all will help avoid flooding and freezing in the pot. Protecting your plants and bulbs from frost damage.
Step 2:
Fill the planter pot half full of the good quality tub and basket compost as it will ensure that roots are formed more quickly and have plant food in it. Add some spring bulbs like miniature daffodils and narcissi into the pot at this point and cover with another layer of compost. These spring bulbs will grow through in the springtime bringing your planter back to life.
Step 3:
Use autumn plants to fill the planter, making sure to pack out the planter as you go along with compost. Autumn planters need more plants added to them compared to summer planters as they are less like to spread out.
Autumn planters can be a mixture of herbs and decorative plants. Use plants like the evergreen delicious-smelling curry plant Helichrysum Italicism to add fragrance to your planter. Foxley Thyme is another great plant, when planting tip it over the edge slightly and as it grows it will cascade down the pot. Grasses such as Frosted Curls will add height and texture to the planter. Mini and Winter Cyclamens are perfect for autumn planters they are full of buds this time of year. If you want to add some autumn colours to your planters, Pansies and Violas are available in orange, yellow and burgundy and will look impressive near your front door. The Helleborus Christmas Carol plant will help create a ghostly appearance ideal for Halloween.
Finally, put your planters near your front door so that they are a decorated welcoming sight. Remember to water your planters even in autumn time, also to deadhead plants as they die, and they will keep on going for months. Autumn Garland and Decorations
When it comes to autumn garlands, scarecrows and decorations there are plenty to choose from. Ready-made garlands are great to get you started, embellish them by adding handmade decorations. Why not get the kids involved and use autumn-coloured felts to cut out shapes such as leaves and pumpkins? All the family can get involved and have great fun decorating.
Pumpkins
What would an autumn display be without a pumpkin or two? Whether it’s a real one or one such as our copper ones you can find in our garden centres. Both look equally great and will get the family in the autumn spirit. Why not experience picking your own pumpkin?
